HOLLYWOOD – TV Land says it will broadcast the last episode of “The Brady Bunch” for the first time since March 8, 1974, the day the show’s original run ended. The episode, where Jan falsely accuses Greg of rape as a practical joke and Mike Brady overreacts and shoots Greg to death, has been deemed too controversial to show in reruns.
“We wanted to prove to the naysayers that we were capable of doing something with gravitas,” explained creator Sherwood Schwartz. “We thought, ‘What better way to do this than by destroying one of our lead characters?’”
In the episode, Greg falls asleep on the couch naked and blended family sister Jan, always the practical joker, curls up next to him and removes her top and bra to reveal her breasts.
When little sister Cindy comes into the room, Jan yells, “He raped me!” Cindy darts out of the room and reenters with father Mike Brady, who aims and fires a shotgun at Greg, killing him instantly.
The camera lingers on a full frontal nude shot of Greg, sprawled out and bloodied, and a topless Jan, who is sobbing, “I’m sorry.”
In the episode’s denouement, Greg’s naked body is being placed on a stretcher by paramedics and Mike Brady is being handcuffed by police.
Mrs. Carol Brady is chiding a still topless Jan: “Jan, what have we told you about your practical jokes? You’re going to get someone in trouble someday.”
Wisecracking housekeeper Alice has the final line: “Oh, well, look at it this way, Mrs. Brady. That’s two fewer males for us gals to clean up after!”
The episode will air with a warning about its adult nature.
