Katie Couric, In Wasilla to Interview Palin, Attacked by Polar Bear; Governor Escapes

WASILLA – CBS Anchorwoman Katie Couric and Republican Vice-Presidential candidate Governor Sarah Palin were attacked by a polar bear last night during an interview scheduled to air later this week.

Authorities believe the attack was in retaliation for Governor Palin’s refusal to place polar bears on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Endangered Species list.

The Governor was walking with Ms. Couric through her backyard when a polar bear leaped from behind a rock and began mauling the helpless television newscaster. Raw video of the incident shows Ms. Couric pinned down by the creature, clawing and kicking, while the Governor frantically searches through her purse for a knife. “Hold on, Katie!” she cries. “I know it’s in here somewhere!”

The footage then shows Governor Palin leaping at the throat of the bear, repeatedly plunging the blade into the soft tissue just under the neck before the animal collapses. Ms. Couric was taken by dog-sled to Anchorage General Hospital.  She is expected to arrive at the facility within the next three days.

The Governor met with reporters shortly after Ms. Couric’s departure. “My prayers are with Katie, and I look forward to completing our scheduled interview if and when she ever recovers from her wounds.” She added that she has no plans to reconsider her decision to deny endangered species protection to her attacker. “These polar bears are a menace to the community.”
