NEW YORK - Maury Povich delivered some welcome good news to disgraced former North Carolina Senator John Edwards on his syndicated day-time talk show yesterday.
Mr. Povich informed Mr. Edwards that he is not the father of the baby born to his mistress Rielle Hunter. Upon hearing the news, the Senator emitted a raucous whoop and holler, and began a series of poorly executed dance moves around the set as a demonstration of his excitement.
“I told you it wasn’t mine,” he shouted at the camera over and over again. He then worked his way through the studio audience, exchanging high-fives and fist-bumps with members of the enthusiastic crowd.
Ms. Hunter, who said earlier in the program that she was “one-million percent sure the baby is John’s,” broke into tears and fled backstage. Cameras followed her down a stairwell and onto the street where she hailed a cab and sped away.
Mr. Edwards and Ms. Rielle made their first joint appearance together on the set of ”Maury” since news of their affair became public last week. The couple agreed to appear on the show to quell rumors, once and for all, surrounding the paternity of the child, Francis Quinn Hunter.
Speaking to reporters following the taping, Senator Edwards explained why he agreed to appear. “My wife has been through so much,” he said. “I just wanted to be able to clear things up in a way that allows me to keep my dignity intact.”
