PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Pirates, on track for a 16th consecutive losing season in the National League Central, have traded their entire 25-man major league roster for the “holy grail” of baseball cards, the 1909 card depicting the Pirates’ legendary shortstop Honus Wagner.
“When a player of Honus’ caliber is available, you just have to go after him,” said Pirates’ general manager Neal Huntington. ”To get value, you have to give up value. And Honus is the kind of player that you build an entire team around. I am ecstatic that we found a way to bring ’The Flying Dutchman’ back to the Pirates’ organization, where he belongs.”
Huntington denied rumors that the team is in talks to join a new league to be started by the Harlem Globetrotters, who plan to launch a baseball version of their comedic exhibition basketball team. The Pirates would assume the role made famous on the hardcourt by the Washington Generals, who have lost more than 13,000 games to the Globetrotters while winning only six.
